The SFQ blog will be down this summer as our main writer Andrew takes some much deserved vacation. However, we're looking to expand our team of writers in the coming months. If interested, please get in touch with us via e-mail and we'd be glad to have you join the SFQ blog staff.

SFQ now listed on Duotrope's Digest PDF Print E-mail
Written by Glover Wright

The kind folks over at Duotrope's Digest -- an online database currently listing more than 2,125 current markets for short fiction, poetry, and novels and anthologies -- have seen fit to list our magazine as a market for science fiction.

We'll be encouraging our authors to take advantage of Duotrope's response times tracker, which gathers statistics on how quickly publications respond to submissions, as well as their submissions tracker, which allows authors to track all of their submissions currently floating around cyberspace or inside a postal carrier.

If you haven't submitted anything to the magazine yet, but you'd like to, now's a great time to go ahead and send in your essay, story, or review. We're currently initially responding to authors within a day of their submissions and, and more importantly we're making an effort to let them know whether or nor their work has been accepted within the space of two weeks.

Submission guidelines are here.

Introducing our new blogger, Andrew Kelly PDF Print E-mail
Written by Andrew M. Kelly

Greetings SF Quarterly Readers,

My name is Andrew Kelly and I've just joined the blogging staff here at SF Quarterly. I currently live, work, and go to school in Boston, Mass. Though I've been interested in Science Fiction for as long as I can remember, I always feel under-read in the genre. For every book I read, there are two sitting on a shelf waiting to be read and ten that I've heard of that I'd like to read. I've recently been focusing on near-future SF and more specifically The Singularity (Charles Stross's Accelerando introduced me to the idea -- if you haven't read it, it's available here for free). I'm also a huge fan of SF movies and television. Stargate SG-1 was great while it lasted and the new Doctor Who is simply some of the best television I've seen in quite a while. (On a related note, check out the new Iron Man trailer -- Marvel has finally managed to adapt a favorite character of mine for the movies!)

I'm more broadly interested in observing how technology can (and will) revolutionize societal mechanisms in the years to come. It remains clear that we live in a time of continuous and accelerating change -- and though I'm tempted to invoke Moore's Law here regarding culture as a whole, the analogy is somewhat misleading. But we have some exciting opportunities ahead of us, and speculative and science fiction remains the most creative window through which we might gaze into our future. Basically, I believe that the infinite scope of human imagination is what makes getting out of bed every day so darn interesting.

I look forward to looking both ahead and behind as we see where this wonderful genre can take us -- "'round the moons of Nibia and 'round the Antares Maelstrom and 'round perdition's flames."

Interesting in blogging about science fiction? E-mail

At Science Fiction Quarterly, we're dedicated first and foremost to producing a coherent publication featuring writing and artwork of the highest quality every three months. But we realize that in this (unfortunate?) era, more may be necessary -- and so we will be blogging, not too often, but mostly when we feel like we have something important and relevant to say (which may, of course, be never).

If you're interested in joining our blog editorial team, send an e-mail to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it with a resume and writing clips, if available. You'll be expected to post once every two days, and more often only if the mood strikes. What we offer: experience, editing. Topics for blogging include but are not limited to science fiction-related news, reviews, interviews, and website recommendations.

Keep in mind that we're not so much interested in competing with the blogosphere as in making a stab at relevancy in between issues. Yeah, we're being up front about that. But still -- and this we really believe -- we're offering a chance to do something interesting and possibly rewarding that yet doesn't require very much. We hope to hear from you soon.
